My piping career

My piping career

As people in the pipe band world will know, players move between bands, people move on in life and other factors can mean the sad demise of particular pipe bands.

After winning the Grade 3 World Pipe Band Championships with Ballynahinch Pipe Band in 1993, players left for bigger and better bands, and soon Ballynahinch did not have enough members to continue.  So I, and a handful of the remaining pipers and drummers, joined Glassdrummond Pipe Band.  After a few successful seasons, this band too lost members and could no longer compete.

It was then that I made my final move to Dr Wright Memorial Pipe Band.  Based in Newtownards, Co Down, this band has enjoyed success over the years, winning the World Pipe Band Championships 2 years in a row! (Grade 4A in 1997 and 3B in 1998).  After a few years piping with Dr Wrights I made the decision to retire from piping after taking up a job in Manchester.  The addition of three young children and two businesses means I no longer can find time for the practice required in a competitive band.

However, pipe bands are still a great interest in my life and I love to keep up with the latest news and gossip.  I've even been known to bring the bagpipes out of retirement to play at friend's weddings, Burns Night Suppers, and other special events!
